Who is Ali Shahrouzi?

Ali Shahrouzi is a photographer, born with cerebral palsy. And since birth, has been unable to make use of his arms and legs. While physically he is bound to a wheelchair, he does not let this define who he is. Ali, is an artist.

Following his granduncles footsteps as an artist, and using his grandfathers hands, they together gave him the inspiration and freedom to create. He started drawing by verbally directing his grandfathers hand, “put a dot here”, “draw a line there”, until he got the image he wanted on paper. This continued on canvas with his father, and later his brother.

Ali, at 13, with a curious mind for photography, began saving his weekly allowance. A year later - and after cutting a deal with his dad - he was able to purchase his very first camera and thus began his journey as a photographer. His paintbrush was now the camera, and his palette was film, his medium became light. He was invited to pursue his art at the Brooks Institute of Photography. Learning the darkroom, large format, medium format, and any format he could use. Eventually this would lead to digital as well. Today, Ali gets help with photography and printing through his assistants and art students who get to experience the multitude of photographic formats Ali uses. As well as the darkroom in the digital era.

He loves black and white photography so much he almost exclusively shot black and white film for over a decade. His current interest and curiosity brings him back into the spectrum of color. His latest series,  Painting with Light, focuses on color abstraction and movement. Ali hopes to bring his vision and art to more people and more galleries. Presently, he shows regularly in Santa Barbara.
